Common Name: dogfennel, tall fennel
Scientific Name: Eupatorium capillifolium (Lam.) Small
Family Name: Asteraceae (Compositae) - Aster or Sunflower Family

Identification Notes:

life cycle - native perennial, reproducing by seed

stems – upright, tall, multiply from base, branching above, becoming woody below, fine pubescent to hairy, sometimes hairless below, often reddish to dark red or purple growth habit 1, growth habit 2

leaves – opposite below and alternate above, pinnately divided 3 (sometimes 3 or 4) times in fine narrow linear segments, granular dots present, small leaves in axils common, foul smelling leaves

flowers – heads of greenish white disk (tubulate) florets, small and inconspicuous; large branched panicles above
