Winter Moth

Winter Moth caterpillarIn the fall of 2009, we saw increased numbers of winter moth adult moths in most areas of Massachusetts, where winter moth has been a problem in previous years. (Coastal Massachusetts, inland to the Worcester area, Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Rhode Island.) It is predicted, that this increase in the numbers of moths suggests that winter moth caterpillars may be quite prevalent once again in those areas during the spring of 2010 and may cause much defoliation damage to untreated trees and other plants.
